Introduction
Ultrasound therapy is a valuable treatment option aimed at alleviating muscle pain and enhancing movement function. This therapeutic technique employs sound waves to generate deep heat within the targeted tissues. Benefits of ultrasound therapy include the reduction of stiffness, swelling, and pain, alongside improved blood circulation and the facilitation of pain-free movement. Most patients experience the procedure as painless and often find it to be a soothing experience.
A qualified healthcare professional, such as a physician or a licensed therapist certified in ultrasound therapy, administers the treatment. It can be performed independently or in conjunction with other therapies, such as stretching, therapeutic massage, heat application, or physical and occupational therapy.
Treatment
During your ultrasound treatment, you will be required to wear a hospital gown. The therapist will only uncover the area of your skin that requires treatment. A special conduction gel will be applied to your skin to enhance the effectiveness of the ultrasound. The ultrasound device, resembling a small computer mouse, will be gently placed against your skin to deliver the therapy. Once the treatment is complete, the conduction gel will be removed.
After the ultrasound session, your therapist may assist you with stretching exercises. This may include passive range of motion activities, followed by active range of motion exercises or massage to further aid in recovery.
