Introduction
Myofascial release is a therapeutic approach designed to relieve pain and ease muscle and tissue tension. "Myo" refers to muscle, and "fascial" pertains to the resilient tissue covering them. When muscles endure injury or strain, both muscle fibers and fascia can become tight, leading to discomfort. This technique, often used by physical and occupational therapists, targets tight or sore regions to reduce pain, promote tissue health, restore mobility, and enhance function. While it’s a form of soft tissue manipulation, myofascial release is distinct from traditional massage.
Treatment
Your physician may recommend a physical or occupational therapist skilled in myofascial release. During your initial visit, the therapist will discuss your symptoms, review your medical history, and assess your posture and joint movements. It's important to point out specific pain areas. The therapist can locate and feel the tight spots that may contribute to your discomfort.
Treatment involves gentle pressure and stretching applied to restricted areas. As the tissue starts to loosen, the therapist will gradually increase the pressure and stretching. This sequence is repeated until the tension in an area is fully released. Multiple sessions may be necessary for optimal results.
