Introduction
A Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) Test is a specialized electrodiagnostic procedure that assesses the functionality of nerves and identifies the location of any nerve compression. Nerves are responsible for transmitting signals between the brain and the rest of the body. Various factors, including inflammation, injuries, and medical conditions, can exert pressure on nerves, hindering their normal function. Physicians utilize NCV tests to diagnose nerve-related issues and develop appropriate treatment plans.
Diagnosis
Nerve conduction velocity tests are typically quick outpatient procedures conducted in a doctor’s office or a hospital setting. Common test sites include the nerves in the arms and legs.
Before starting the test, your physician or a diagnostic technician will apply adhesive electrodes to your skin along the path of a specific nerve. During the procedure, the nerve will be stimulated at one or multiple points, while a computer measures the time it takes for the nerve impulse to reach a designated location. Some discomfort may be experienced during the nerve conduction study.
After the test, your physician will evaluate the NCV results to determine whether the nerve is functioning properly. They will then discuss the findings of your NCV test with you.
