Introduction
Myofascial release is a therapeutic approach designed to alleviate pain and promote relaxation in muscles and surrounding tissues. The term "myo" refers to muscles, while "fascial" pertains to the resilient tissue enveloping them. When muscles sustain injuries or strains, both the muscle fibers and fascia tend to tighten, leading to discomfort. This technique, employed by physical and occupational therapists, focuses on stretching tense and painful areas to enhance tissue health, restore mobility, and improve overall function. It's important to note that myofascial release differs from traditional massage therapy as it specifically targets muscle tension and fascial restrictions.
Treatment
Your healthcare provider can recommend a physical or occupational therapist who specializes in myofascial release therapy. During your first appointment, the therapist will inquire about your symptoms and medical history while assessing your posture and joint movements. Be sure to communicate the locations of your pain, as the therapist will identify areas of tightness that may be contributing to your discomfort.
The therapist will use gentle pressure and stretching techniques on the restricted areas. As the tissue begins to relax, they will gradually increase the pressure and stretch applied. This process may be repeated several times until the targeted area is fully relaxed. Multiple treatment sessions may be necessary for optimal results.
