Introduction

The hindfoot comprises two primary bones: the calcaneus (the heel) and the talus (located above the calcaneus). The talus forms the ankle joint with the two bones of the leg that sit above it. When you stand or walk, the hindfoot plays a crucial role in supporting and distributing your body weight across your foot.
Causes
Hindfoot fractures typically arise from high-impact forces, such as those experienced in car crashes or falls from significant heights. Snowboarding-related injuries have also become a more common cause.
Symptoms
Individuals with hindfoot fractures often experience pain, swelling, stiffness, and bruising. Putting weight on the injured foot may be impossible, severely limiting mobility.
Diagnosis

Treatment

Treatment may include wearing a cast or splint to stabilize the foot while healing occurs, which typically takes six to eight weeks. During this time, you will be unable to bear weight on your foot and may need to use crutches or a walker for mobility.
Surgery
Surgical intervention is often required for hindfoot fractures where the bones are misaligned. The procedure involves repositioning the bones and securing them with surgical hardware. In certain instances, a bone graft may be necessary to fill voids left by shattered bone.
After surgery, a protective cast or splint is worn while healing takes place, during which weight-bearing is restricted for approximately 6 to 10 weeks. Initially, you might need a cane or a specialized boot to assist with walking.
Recovery
Post-treatment, physical therapy is generally recommended for hindfoot fractures. Therapy focuses on exercises to improve mobility and strengthen the ankle joint. Your physical therapist will guide you in walking with support, gradually allowing you to increase weight on your foot as your independence improves. The overall recovery from hindfoot fractures can be lengthy, sometimes extending up to a year, with your doctor providing updates on your progress.
