Is PRP treatment an option for you?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
WHAT IS PRP?
PRP is a restorative therapy that uses a concentrated portion of your own blood—rich in platelets and growth factors—to support your body’s natural healing response.
HOW IS IT OBTAINED?
Blood is drawn from the patient and placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates the plasma from red blood cells and concentrates the platelets.
HOW IS IT ADMINISTERED?
PRP is injected into the affected tissue or joint. For best results it is done under ultrasound guidance to ensure accuracy.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
PRP works by promoting, speeding, and improving the healing of soft tissue and bone. Clinical trials have shown PRP to be most effective in the treatment of chronic tendon injuries such as tennis elbow, patellar tendonitis and achilles tendonitis.
Other clinical studies have shown promising results for knee osteoarthritis. A one year follow up study from the Hospital of Special Surgery in New York showed that in young adults with early osteoarthritis, PRP stopped the progression of arthritis, improved function, and decreased the pain in 73% of the patients.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Since PRP is obtained from your own blood, there is no disease transmission or allergic reaction to it. Patients may experience soreness and mild pain for a couple of days after the injection.
WHEN TO EXPECT RESULTS?
Results usually begin within 3-6 weeks. This can vary based on the area treated and the severity of the condition. In addition, more than one injection may be necessary to reach optimal results.
